Skilled birth attendance follows the definition of SDG indicator 3.1.2 Proportion of births attended by skilled health personnel.
Note: In DHS-8, the reference time period for this indicator changed from 5 years to 2 years, reflecting a shorter time period asked about in the women’s questionnaire.
The following data are considered for this analysis:
• Live births in the 2 years preceding the survey (NR - Pregnancy and Postnatal Care Recode)
• Skilled health personnel: generally doctors, nurses or midwives but can refer to other health professionals providing childbirth care.
The standard LNOB analysis for Skilled birth attendance includes the following circumstances:
• Wealth of the household: top 60 or bottom 40 (of the wealth distribution)
• Residence: urban or rural
• Education level: lower (primary or less), secondary or higher
• Age group: 15-24, 25-34 and 35-49
• Number of children born: none (<0.5), 1 or more (>0.5), 2 or more (>1.5), 3 or more (>2.5), fewer than 2 (<1.5), fewer than 3 (<2.5)
• Marital status: single, married, divorced, separated
